While it is no secret that weddings can be wasteful events, they do not have to be! There are several choices that couples can make to reduce their big day’s effect on the environment and be eco-conscious. Even just small changes can make a major difference!
You don’t have to skip the party at your Omaha wedding venue though, there are a ton of sustainable wedding ideas to help you “go green.” These are some of our favorites:
1. Choose eco-friendly invitations
Wedding invitations can use up a lot of paper, so it can be beneficial to print them out on recycled paper or use alternative materials. Another option is to work with a stationery company that gives back in some way to the environment with every purchase they get. Perhaps the most green option is to print your invitations out on seed paper! This is a biodegradable material that your guests can put in soil and it will sprout flowers!
2. Avoid single-use materials
While we all agree that using plastic plates and cups is easier, especially during a DIY or budget wedding, they are not the most eco friendly. Instead, you can request from your caterer reusable dishes or even use rental dishes! This way you know that these items will not immediately end up in a landfill after your wedding. Some other rental items you can consider are linens to be used for the tables and as napkins!
3. Use pre-existing decor
A lot of people like to decorate up their event space with candles, signage, mirrors and more. You can look at the items you already have in your home and things that family members own and consider incorporating them as decorations for your big day. Even just doing this for a small portion of your decorations can be useful and cut down on waste!
Another way you can use pre-existing decor is to pick an Omaha wedding venue that fits your vibe and aesthetic. For example, The Club at Indian Creek offers a scenic backdrop with our beautiful greens surrounding the clubhouse that couples can use for wedding photos.
4. Donate leftover food and flowers
Many couples want their Omaha wedding venue to be filled with beautiful floral arrangements, but what do you do with them all at the end of the night? Instead of throwing them away or composting them, couples can donate arrangements to local churches, hospitals or nursing homes. These flowers can make someone's day!
There is also surely going to be a ton of leftover food at the end of the night too. These leftovers can be donated too! Food pantries and homeless shelters will likely appreciate your donation and then there is less food waste.
5. Offer a shuttle service
If you are having your reception at a different location than your ceremony, you can offer a shuttle service to and from the reception space to cut down on the amount of vehicles driving on the road. Shuttles can also be brought to any hotel blocks couples book for their guests and take them to the Omaha wedding venue too.
The Club at Indian Creek is the best Omaha wedding venue! We can help you to host an eco-friendly wedding all while giving you a beautiful indoor and outdoor space. Contact us to book your date!
