Weddings are a special time for the couple, but it is also an incredibly fun and joyous experience for the families! This is a great time to visit with friends and family who come from out of town or ones that you don’t get to see all that often. At Indian Creek, we love to see how couples incorporate their family into their special day! If you have lots of little ones in your family that you would like to incorporate into the ceremony, you may be wondering where exactly you can fit them in and what that might look like.
Beyond nieces, nephews, cousins and siblings, you may be a couple with kids of your own! If this is the case, deciding on a role for them based on their age may be a bit difficult. If you are struggling to determine how to include the kids in your life into your wedding ceremony and reception, here are some super helpful tips and suggestions to make everyone happy and included!
Leading the procession
If you are a couple with kids, you will most likely want to have your kids pretty heavily involved in the ceremony. A great way to make them feel special and important is to have them lead the procession! They can help lead you down the course at Indian Creek! To make it a little more fun for them, have them help you make a sign or flag that they can carry to announce the new couple. This can be a fun way to get them involved in the decorations and make them feel included in the preparations and ceremony.
Cake toppers
Another really easy, but fun way to include your own children in your reception is by representing them in the cake toppers. Instead of just using a bride and groom, have some toppers of your kids made as well! This will make them feel super included, but will also give them something small to keep to remember the day.
Older children
If you have some older children in your family that you would like to include in the ceremony or reception, it is a bit easier to find a role than those who are a bit younger. Older children have a lot more capabilities that you can utilize to give them their own special place. Of course, you can always make them junior bridesmaids or groomsmen. This means that they will do pretty much everything that the groomsmen and bridesmaids do, but they will not attend the parties or events surrounding the wedding. Again, this is a great way to make kids feel super involved and special.
Older children can also be assigned readings at the ceremony. You can pick out a passage about love, marriage or whatever fits you and your partner. Make sure to go over this in advance with them before the ceremony to be sure they understand everything they are supposed to be reading! Lastly, a great way to include kids who may not want to stand or talk in front of people is to make them an usher. They can help hand out programs or lead people to seats!
Younger children
The typical way that most couples incorporate younger children into their ceremony is by having them be the flower girl or ring bearers. This is always a great choice to help them feel involved, included and have a little bit of fun. Have them help you pick out the flower petals they will be dropping or what pillow, box or other fun containers they can bring the ring up with. You can also have them join you on the dance floor during your first dance or a special dance with just them. Decide what you think each child would prefer and try to make them feel as special as possible!
