Are you an expert planner? Is planning parties and events second nature to you? If so, you may have considered a career in event planning. Better yet, a career in wedding planning!
Some people shy away from these big events and hire someone else to do all the planning and organizing, but if you thrive off of these things, this may be the perfect choice for you! Being a wedding planner comes with so many awesome benefits. You get to help amazing couples live out their dream ceremony and usually you get to participate, too!
Most couples will give you a gift or a thank you after the wedding to show you how much they appreciate all of their hard work. You get to meet tons of amazing vendors and explore beautiful venues as you search out the perfect menu and location for your couple. This job comes with quite a bit of creativity. You must take the instruction given and bring it to life. If this all sounds like you, a career in wedding event management may be just around the corner.
Get experience
One of the first things you should do if you are considering a career in wedding event management is to get some experience. This isn’t just so you have a pretty resume, you should also do this to be sure if wedding planning is the right move for you. You may be a lover of weddings, but that doesn’t mean that you will be a lover of planning them.
See if you can find some local places that will allow you to help out and get some experience. Consider looking at wedding venues, floral shops, restaurants, catering companies or other event planning businesses. They will help you get your foot in the door and get you some much needed experience.
What it takes
You may be wondering what type of qualities you could have that would help you be a successful and efficient wedding planner. Having organizational skills is a given. It helps tremendously if organization is practically your middle name, but what other skills and qualities make a great planner?
Leadership
A good wedding planner comes with good leadership. You have to be able and willing to be the boss of many different moving parts. A lot of times you will be the main point of contact when it comes to vendors, which means you will need to be able to lead them in the right direction and be able to make quick decisions. You will need to excel at getting things done and taking initiative when the couple you are helping can’t.
Empathy
Though someone who doesn’t work with empathy could be a great wedding planner, someone who can do the job to make the couple feel special and cared about makes all the difference. Couples want to hire someone who will work with them, not just for them. They want to feel like their thoughts and opinions are being heard and that you are helping them through every emotion that comes with getting married.
Never stop learning
This may sound like a cheesy tip, but the wedding industry is constantly changing. There are new trends, new ideas and new styles. You want to be constantly learning about new things and constantly evolving to be able to better help your clients. If you are looking for a career where you can constantly learn and grow, this is a great choice!
